This book was a bit frightening to me in that it seems like Evelyn was reaching into my mind and pulling my life out and putting it on paper. So much of this book reminded me of what I have been through from PTSD to severe depression that I had to put the book down several times because it hit close to home. I am sure that I will read it again and again to see what else I can learn about myself through this amazing book. As someone who has been told to snap out of it, this book spoke to me on a level that very few books can.

The theme of this book, No, You CANNOT JUST SNAP OUT OF IT, by Evelyn Rodas, is that there is a major difference between sadness, which almost everyone experiences from time to time, and the physical disease, based in the brain, commonly called Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Because the two maladies are so often confused, Evelyn Rodas proposes a new term for the latter, Stress-Driven Neurobiological Illness (SDNBI).

The author’s purpose is to provide hope and guidance to people who suffer from SDNBI. I think the book accomplishes that objective, but it is complex and requires careful reading. There are three separate discussions, which overlap in places. One element is the personal experience of the author. She describes the confusion she went through until she was accurately diagnosed, various periods of hospitalization, the almost unbearable side effects of medical treatment, and the great relief she felt when her treatment succeeded.

Another topic that runs through the book is the distinction between the types of discomfort: emotional issues commonly referred to as “depression,” although they do not require medical treatment, and SDNBI involving physical agony like debilitating anxiety, stomach aches, overbearing headaches, sleeplessness, paralysis of limbs, and so on.

A good deal of the work is devoted to the kinds of treatment for Stress-Driven Neurobiological Illness. There are many medications serving different purposes. For treatment-resistant cases, there is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, Vagus Nerve Stimulation, and Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT). The author emphasizes, as do many health professionals, that ECT can have serious side effects and is not always effective.

Ms. Roda’s book is an excellent choice for people with significant brain-based depression, especially those who have not yet discovered the appropriate treatment.
